Beautiful Sunday @ Mart 130

Kienyhow . Middle Park Melbourne by Kieny How, on Flickr
It has always been hard to wake up for brekkie and even harder to wake your friends up to have it with you since most will prefer to sleep than eat – that’s also my mentality in the past: “Why wake up when I can snuggle in my bed all day long?”

I used to be a nocturnal when I was doing my under-grad, I sleep at 5am everyday just before the sun rises, wake up at 1pm so that I can still do my stuff - waking up for breakfast only happens once in a blue moon. The other way I did was not to sleep and have a sluggish brekkie; those foods never taste as good as someone else describes since it’s always quite tasteless to me.

The environment is cozy, the seat is comfortable, noise is at moderate level, staffs are friendly but busy, service is alright (just have to wait a bit because of the crowd), their food is “thumps up” and latte is fine but still can’t beat that one in Canberra Gus’s Café.

September Boomers

I summarized up the birthday list, and I realized many of my good buddies are born in September… I might already miss to wish some of you ‘Happy Birthday’ on that particular day for some excuses like – I’m out forgetting the time, I overslept in the toilet, busy looking at girls along the street, busy depressing about my life, sadly working away, happily dreaming my day away and lazily procrastinating. So, I decided to leave a personal message for all of you that I truly treasure, I wish all of you Happy Birthday and healthy all year long.

And don’t get too fat from those chocolates I gave you… Enjoy your new year!

No-one Mourns The Wicked

Reviewed by Darren Levin

"A MUSICAL about wizards, witches, flying monkeys and an emerald city may not seem ostensibly Jewish.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s parallel novel set in the Land of Oz, Wicked has been brought to the stage by Jewish-American composer Stephen Schwartz.

What is This Feeling?

It tells the story of Elphaba (Amanda Harrison), a misunderstood teen with a green complexion, who forms an unlikely friendship with Glinda (Lucy Durack), her fresh-faced and popular opposite.

Forced to room together at a toffy boarding school, the pair’s relationship gets off to a rocky start.

But they gradually learn to accept each other’s differences -– Glinda even gives the decidedly uncool Elphaba a lesson in popularity in the upbeat, musical highlight Popular (I’ll show you what shoes to wear/ How to fix your hair/ Everything that really counts to be popular).

Things aren’t as rosy in the Land of Oz, however. The not-so-wonderful Wizard (played by theatre veteran Rob Guest) and his press secretary Madame Morrible (Maggie Kirkpatrick in fine form) have organised a scare campaign against the talking animals of Oz.

And when Elphaba tries to intervene, she’s demonised..."

Wicked~ the review explains clearly that this is a good show. For I don’t have any past experience on musical shows, I can’t make comparison but overall I enjoyed it. For it’s touching, hilarious and interesting throughout the scenes, and also the colourful setup in the theatre was eye-catching, all the artist are talented, conductor caught my attention, musics and lyrics are pleasant~

Auction Rooms in North Melbourne

Happy Tiff . Auction Rooms North Melbourne by Kieny How, on Flickr
The very first time I had brekkie in Melbourne was with Eddie. That restaurant was quite antique and I kind of like that venue but all I can remember now is that the bacon there is great! and I don’t even know the name of the restaurant… For this reason, I decided to hunt for more Brekkie so I get to try all the good ones around and thanks to The Breakfast Blog for the motivation and guides.

It was meant to be brekkie next door but end up having brunch in Auction Rooms, though it’s not the best, it’s not that bad after all. Auction Rooms has a spacious venue with good atmosphere for having coffee and chilling with friends. We ended up sitting there for two hours and drinking up a few bottles of their free blue-bottled-sky-juice and the feeling is just great!! And of course, I had my latte but it’s not that good though~

They have interesting menu like the one we ordered – Opening Bids and Counter Bids. Both with 2 perfectly poached eggs on top of the toasted Sourdough – how nice is that? My favorite “EGGS”! Opening Bids comes with bacon while Counter Bid comes with b'EWW'troot on it… Alwite I just don’t like Beetroot and according to Wei – it’s fresh!

Overall, I like it there as everything seems decent as it is and the venue is nice as well!

There’s one more nice thing in there, they serve tea! Well, nothing big but there’s one that interested me, very rare to be seen around here “Iron Goddess (铁观音!)” – make me think of Bak Kut Teh only~

BAK KUT TEH is still the best Breakfast!!! Hoho~

Canberra Capital of Australia

Last Tuesday, a Malaysian lady asked me a question – what if our passport expires in Australia, can we still fly back to Malaysia? I told her yes only if the immigration officers escort her up the plane personally then explain how she is severely banned from Australia, and she’ll probably get a free ride for that trip as well~

The alternative way will be like what I did, travel to Malaysia High Commission in Canberra and get the passport renew. The good thing is that the passport can be renewed and collected on that particular day and the bad thing is, if you are from other State rather than Canberra, you still have to be there in person (the only way) to renew that ‘Boleh!’ passport.

When I reached the Embassy at 9.15am, a few were there for passport renewal and they were already complaining about the expensive flight to Canberra just to get their passport renew – the passport cost AU $110 and the return flight to get to Canberra range from $300 to $500 depending on the location and that’s if they travel with Qantas or Jetstar. I got my return ticket for $120 with Tiger Airways so I’m cool with it - Tiger Rulez~

After submitting my applications to the staff, he asked me if I’d like to have a packet of Nasi Lemak for AU $5.00 then he told me “It’s fresh!! My wife just made it this morning!!!” But I turned him down because I wanted to try food in Canberra, definitely not Nasi Lemak from Malaysia Embassy. There’re about 6 packets on his table, and there’re 8 appointed persons on the floor waiting to submit their application – I believe this is one of the embassy staff way to earn more cash which I think is quite brilliant, maybe I can do it to my colleagues if I don’t get fired~

I didn’t go Canberra alone but with a friend Phillip and it happens that he asked one of the staffs whether there is any nice Malaysian food around Canberra. Phillip is from Kuching, that staff told him that there’s a nice Sarawak Laksa at this place nearby the embassy making him all excited. He came to me and insisted that we change plan and go to that place for the Sarawak Laksa since we don’t have it in Melbourne, we were discussing so loudly that it excites a lady next to us in the embassy. In the end, she actually joined us to all the places we went for that day. Happily, all taxi expenses divide by 3 since the taxi fare is so expensive!!

Mama Laksa . Canberra by Kieny How, on Flickr

When we reached the restaurant, the menu read a dish name – Mama Laksa AU$20. I believe that this is the most expensive lunch restaurant around, and the High Commission definitely has some shares in this shop! AU$20 bucks for a bowl of so-called Sarawak Mama Laksa which tastes exactly like a normal Laksa is not worthy at all – the taste is decent, the look is decent, the amount is decent, even the shop looks decent but the price is definitely not worth it’s decency! So we got ripped!!

There’s nothing much in Canberra , we went to this famous long time café that I reviewed on Google ‘All Things Chocolate’ – I’m expecting the café to look modern and nice for its name but it actually looks quite dodgy, nothing like Max Brenner or Koko Black. Despite the look of that shop, I’m impressed by their unique hot chocolate as it’s very nice – I believe they live up their name.

We hang out around for a while, went back the embassy to collect our passport, then to the Parliament and some places around the city to pass some time while we wait for the flight to Melbourne.

Canberra is clean and green but an ultimately bored city, there’s so much trees around that I nearly felt I’m in a city within a big jungle. I hardly see anyone around during lunch time (you should realized from my pictures itself) and I counted 12 Asians throughout my whole day. There are more people in the city area but one of the Asian group actually stares at us in a weird way – so I thought they probably feel awkward seeing three more Asians around the city!

Well, there are some things that amazed me though...
